This would be Nancy’s last riding day. We’d enjoyed the Genesee Greenway so much that our plan was to ride it basically the whole way into Rochester. It was raining in the morning, with showers expected to mostly clear by 10:00, so we headed off to the hotel breakfast to kill some time. (Entirely acceptable diner food). Between breakfast and rain gear logistics we didn’t get on the road until 10:45 or so, but the mileage was short, and we’d start with dropping the altitude we’d gained yesterday.
When we got on the road there were still some spots of rain, but never so much that we decided to stop for more rain gear. It was easy riding to the Greenway, past some actual farming, along with the Kraft/Heinz and Barilla factories.
The greenway was lovely, probably even nicer than yesterday with the dampness.
We stopped for coffee and lunch in Scottstown, where we’d entered the greenway yesterday, then hopped back on the trail as the surroundings became somewhat more urban on the outskirts of Rochester.
Still nice riding, and we saw a groundhog!
As we headed into town, Nancy was flagging and we were running late.
We were supposed to meet our friend John at the train station; Nancy would be taking the train back to Buffalo, while John would be joining me on the ride for a few days. Turns out John’s train was also late, but he got there before us, so we met downtown on the Main Street Bridge.
John and I have been friends since 7th grade. We ran cross-country together back in the day, and a while ago we did a bike tour of the California coast. If you want to get an idea of how long ago that was, John had a camera that saved images on a 3.5″ floppy disk. It was good to reconnect over a Cream Ale at the Genesee Brewing Company.
We dropped Nancy off at the station for her train back to Buffalo, then headed out to our AirBNB, which was an odd co-op building mostly populated by hippies. We stuck our bikes in the deconsecrated church/rec center next door and headed out for dinner. After unexpectedly wandering into a titty bar, we found a neighborhood pub that was showing the Bills game; a legit cultural experience.
Returning to the co-op, we crashed in preparation for the long day tomorrow.
